HSSCU Higher Education Scholarships

At HSSCU, we are passionate about helping our members with their educational pursuits. We are well aware that education can be one of the most important aspects of someone’s life and we are thrilled to help make it easier for our members. With that in mind, we provide €50,000 in scholarship funds each year. Whether studying for a degree, diploma, masters or any further education course, our members can apply for a HSSCU scholarship. So far we have helped with physiotherapy, art courses, disability studies and more – and what’s more, it doesn’t matter what year of your course you’re in. This year, we decided to extend our application closing date to September 21st due to the later Leaving Certificate results. Please see testimonial from one of last year’s winners below – the lovely Kathie Taylor!

HSSCU Scholarship - Kathie Taylor

My name is Kathie, I am 52 years old and have worked for HSE/Tusla for the last 20 years. I completed my Honours degree in Social Studies and Criminology in 2013, studying part time for 6 years while working night shifts. I have 3 children , all grown up now who were also studying until recently so it was a very expensive time, as I was a single parent. I decided when I was 50 to return to college to complete a Master’s degree in Human Rights and Social Policy and was accepted into the course in Maynooth University to begin study in September 2018. While it was a fantastic challenge for me, it was also a lot of pressure both financially and academically!

I came across an article in the HSSCU newsletter about the scholarship and decided to apply. I got an email last September from the Credit Union to say that I had been successful and would be awarded the funding to cover my fees for the duration of the Masters. To say I was thrilled wouldn’t cover it, as the pressure of studying, along with the added financial pressure had me second guessing my decision to return to study at all!

I completed my Master’s degree in July 2020 and got my results just a couple of days ago… I got a 2:1 degree, which I am extremely happy about! While I had committed to undertake the course before I was aware of the scholarship I can definitely say that receiving the funding for the fees took huge pressure off me and allowed me to just focus on college.

I am very grateful for the support from the Credit Union and would urge anyone who can to apply for the scholarship!
